The third phase of the Farag del Madrid conservation program has already begun. It has the will to safeguard and value this archaeological site declared as an asset of cultural interest (BIC) and which is one of the most outstanding attributes of the Val del Madrid-Perafita-Caldor (VMPC), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The coordinator of the program launched by the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivier Corina; the archaeologist of the department, Abel Forte, and the director of the management commission of the Valley, Susanna Simon, explained this Tuesday that the third phase will focus on the documentation of the house, the beginning of the study of the vestiges of what could be the first house of the 18th century and the excavation of the feeding system of the boats de la Farag. In addition, the patrimonial documentation and reporting of the entire process will continue.

With the aim of bringing the restoration work closer to the public, from August 7 to September 1, guided tours of the Forge site will be organized on Thursdays. In addition, once the actions are completed in 2024, a monograph on the Farag del Madrid will be published and two tourist itineraries will be offered: an interpretation circuit centered on the VMPC and another of a cross-border nature attached to the Rota del Ferro in the Pyrenees.

During the press conference, the technical team also presented the results of the 2022 campaign. Last summer, the smithy was restored and the archaeological work focused on the workshop, hydraulic system, coal house and the house of the Forge. These excavation works have made it possible to document a unique forge, since in it you can observe the different work phases of transforming the ore until it reaches the iron ingot.
